The Dunes Golf & Beach Club was designed and
built on land owned by Myrtle Beach Farms
through the vision and efforts of George
W. "Buster" Bryan. Bryan gathered a group
of Myrtle Beach's leading citizens to form
a corporation and build the golf course.
The final decision to go ahead with the
incorporation and form the golf club was
made at a meeting of subscribers on May
31, 1948.The group decided to consult
the famous golf course architect Robert
Trent Jones, who worked with Bobby Jones
to build Peachtree G.C. in Atlanta and
remodeled the 11th and 16th holes at Augusta
National G.C. No other golf course architect
was even considered. The Dunes Golf and
Beach Club was built on 270 acres of land
that Trent Jones scribed as "a lovely piece
of land studded with live oaks where the
Singleton Swash empties into the Atlantic
Ocean." It was not a true seaside course,
but it was as close as he had come to one
at that point. He was able to work the
water in on several holes, including the
13th that became of the world's famous
Par-5's and perhaps the best example of
Jones' philosophy of heroic adventure.
The Dunes is one of his landmark courses.
He built the course on land with a colorful
history. It was deer and turkey hunting
ground before becoming an Air Force target
range during World War II. Jones incorporates
his favorite design features in the layout:
long tees, well-defined fairway traps to
give the player a target off the tee, and
huge, elevated greens.
